On April 11, 2022, UPRM hosted the public launch of the OneBusAway application for the rural bus system. The event was held at the Yagüez Theater with the participation of Eng. Jorge Ramos, acting Mayor of the Municipality of Mayaguez and Eileen Vélez, Secretary of Transportation and Public Works of Puerto Rico. Dr. Didier Valdés, PhD, PI for the OneBusAway project in UPRM, and other NICR professors and students also attended. Dr. Valdés gave a short presentation to the audience about the benefits and main features of OneBusAway. The rural system in Mayagüez consists of six bus routes that connect rural neighborhoods with the city’s urban core. The system is roughly 6 years old, and Puerto Rico expects the OneBusAway application will serve to attract new users, especially UPRM students.
